This system transports waste products from the liver to the duodenum (the first segment of the small intestine) and aids digestion through the controlled release of bile. Bile is a yellowish-green fluid generated by liver cells that contains cholesterol and bile salts. During digestion, bile breaks down fats and transports waste. The duodenum receives half of all bile, while the gallbladder stores the other half. When food is consumed, the gallbladder discharges stored bile into the duodenum to aid with fat digestion. Most of the released bile (90 percent) is reabsorbed in the intestinal tract. A small percentage of bile is eventually excreted in the form of feces and is the component that gives feces their dark brown color.
