Laparoscopy is a type of surgery that involves smaller incisions than you might think. The procedure is named after the laparoscope, a thin probe with a tiny video camera and light on the end. When a surgeon puts it through a small cut and into your body, they can view what's going on inside you on a video display. They'd have to construct a far larger opening if they didn't have those equipment. Your surgeon will not have to reach into your body, either, thanks to special devices. This also means that there will be less chopping. Before this method, a surgeon operating on a patient's belly had to make a 6-to-12-inch-long incision. That allowed them enough space to see what they were doing and accomplish whatever they needed to. The surgeon makes multiple tiny cuts during laparoscopic surgery. Each one is usually no more than a half-inch long. (This is why it's also known as keyhole surgery.) They put a tube through each incision and then insert the camera and surgical equipment. The operation is then performed by the surgeon.
