Anesthesia is often administered to the patient prior to laser surgery for the treatment of an anal fistula. Then, a tiny probe is inserted into the fistula tract using an endoscope or other imaging methods. The tissues lining the fistula tract are targeted by and destroyed by the laser radiation that is transferred through the probe. The controlled thermal damage caused by the laser radiation effectively seals off the fistula tract. A crooked connection or tunnel between the skin covering the anus and the anal canal, where the digestive tract ends, is called an anal fistula. An infection or pus-filled abscess is typically located in the anal glands, which are tiny glands near the anus.
