A cholecystectomy is the surgical removal of your gallbladder, a pear-shaped organ situated directly behind your liver on the upper right side of your abdomen. Your liver produces bile, a digestive fluid that is collected and kept in your gallbladder. A common surgical treatment with little chance of complications is cholecystectomy. You are usually able to go home on the day after your cholecystectomy. Typically, a cholecystectomy involves four small abdominal incisions, insertion of a tiny video camera, and removal of the gallbladder using advanced surgical instruments. If you're a physician, refer to it as a laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The gallbladder may occasionally be removed with a single, large incision.
